After another stint in the Hospital for back issues that occurred as I sat a stop sign (yes, a woman on a cell phone slammed into me thinking she could save time by going through me, rather than waiting), I came to the conclusion that it maybe a very long time before I might be riding again.

So, the bike that was going to the bike of all bikes will start looking for a new home.

The nickname of this bike is "Frankenbike". A mix of all the best possible parts to end up with a killer bike.

The base for this bike was a 1978 Maico Magnum. From there, everything but the wheels were touched, massaged, or replaced.

First to go, was the engine and a 1981 250 Reed engine purchased from the well respect Greg Bowels ( I might have misspelled the last name) who went through the engine completely. New Boysen Reeds and Honda CR 250 intake. PVL ignition, Aluminum Billet ignition cover, Mikuni carb and Pro-form pipe and silencer. Also an aluminum oil bolt. New cables throughout.

The frame was completely stripped down and Maico Only frame gussets welded in place. The frame then was powered coated Silver/Gray.

The forks came to me from Rage racing with the travel reduced to 11 inches.

The swingarm is a MO Thor Arm.

New chain and sprockets, Billet rear brake pedal.

Brand New All White plastic from Maico Only!

As mentioned, I did not redo the wheels. They are well built HD wheels, but the rear rim has a small repair. But my thinking was that this is a true race bike and since the wheels are strong and well built, I will overlook the minor blemish. The tires have about 95% life left in them.

I actually have to mount a special washer to the bottom rear shock mount to attach the return spring to.

Shocks.....I currently have a pair of $800.00 piggy back Works shocks mounted to the bike. These were acquired in a multi bike deal and were suppose to be for this application. To me, the bike sits a touch too high in the rear, I have a standard set of fresh shocks that came with the original bike that used a 1981 swingarm. These are the shocks that will come on the bike. If you wish to keep the Piggybacks and work around the balance issue, we could work out something to allow these shocks to go with the bike.

As everyone knows, a bike of this caliber cost me well over $6000.00

Well, we also know that, that money will never be recovered (it was not meant to be, this was MY race bike).

Bottom line $4500.00

I will help ship (you pay shipping and handling costs) any where in the world.

Seeing that the economy sucks, I would take cash and a decent trade that I could sell to get my bottom line asking price.

Richard

(865) For sale by auction on Saturday 22nd October 2011 with Historics at Brooklands, Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit, Weybridge, Surrey.

1959 Ducati 175 Super Sport
Registration: XSY465
Chassis Number: 77842
Engine Number: 77913
Odometer reading: 01700
Estimate £6,500-£9,500

The Ducati Gran Sport, particularly in the 100 and 125cc versions, were incredibly successful between 1955 and 1958 and even after it was replaced by the Ducati F3, many riders in Italy continued to campaign the Gran Sport. The success of the Gran Sport was such that Fabio Taglioni was allowed to adapt his advanced single cylinder overhead- camshaft engine for production. Most motorcycles of the period still featured overhead valves operated by pushrods and while there was little to separate the ohv 98s and 125s from dozens of other Italian motorcycles available at the time, the overhead-camshaft 175 provided exceptional performance. The 175 Sport was first displayed at the end of 1956 and was followed shortly afterwards by the 175T with a slightly detuned engine. Although the aluminium overhead-camshaft engine was based on the Gran Sport, the crankcases were now die cast and the cylinder head were in one piece. The chassis too was based on the Gran Sport with a single down tube frame that utilized the engine as a stressed member. Setting the 175 Sport apart from other motorcycles in 1957 was the sculptured fuel tank. Designed to follow function it featured arm recesses to allow a crouched rider to hug the motorcycle while gripping the clip-on handle bars. There were even eyelets in the tank to secure a chin pad for racers who really wanted to get their head down. There were detail changes to the 175 Sport and 175T over the next few years, in 1958 the 175 Sport received a dual silencer and also a revised carburettor and from 1959 there was a tuning kit available with a larger carburettor and a racing cam shaft. These kits were fitted by the supplying dealers and the motorcycles became the 175 Super Sport.

This beautiful Ducati 175 Super Sport was import to the United Kingdom from Italy in 1997 for the vendor to prepare and anticipate in the Motogiro D'Italia Road Rally around Italy, which he completed. It has been the subject to a recent, two year, ground-up restoration and has not been used since. Finished in the factory colours of bronze and red, the Ducati is being sold with a V5C registration document, a new MoT test certificate and a history file containing a number of old MoT test certificates. Here is a rare opportunity to own an iconic Italian motorcycle.
